If you’ve scheduled an initial consultation with The Shaw Law Group, welcome. We’re glad you’re here, and we’re looking forward to meeting you.
For many people, this first meeting comes at a stressful and uncertain moment. You may be feeling overwhelmed, unsure of what comes next, or simply looking for answers. The purpose of your initial consultation is to give you clarity, explain your options, and help you feel supported from the very beginning.
Here’s what you can expect from your first meeting with our office.
This Is Your Opportunity to Share Your Story
Your consultation is your time to talk. We want to understand what’s happening in your life, what brought you to this point, and what you’re hoping to achieve moving forward.
Whether you’re facing a divorce, custody concerns, or another family law matter, every situation is unique. The more we understand your goals, priorities, and concerns, the better we can guide you through the process and help you make informed decisions.
There is no need to have everything perfectly organized or figured out. Our job is to listen, ask the right questions, and help you make sense of your next steps.
Bring Any Case Documents You Already Have
If anything has already been filed in your case, we ask that you bring those documents with you to the consultation. This may include petitions, responses, court orders, or letters you’ve received related to your matter.
These documents help us understand where your case currently stands and what deadlines or requirements may already be in play. If nothing has been filed yet, that’s completely fine. Many clients come to us before the legal process officially begins.
What Happens After the Consultation
After your consultation, you’ll receive a short list of homework that must be completed before we can begin working on your case. These documents are essential and allow us to move forward efficiently and accurately on your behalf.
You’ll be asked to complete and return three items:
- Your Representation Agreement
- Our General Information Packet
- Your Affidavit of Financial Information
Once all three documents are fully completed and returned, along with the required advance fee, our team will officially begin working on your case.
Why These Forms Matter
Two of these documents play a particularly important role in your case.
The General Information Packet gives us the details we need to prepare your initial pleading or response. It includes information about assets, accounts, and financial institutions. Providing clear and specific information allows us to advocate more effectively for you, especially when negotiating settlement terms.
The Affidavit of Financial Information, often called the AFI, is a court required financial document. Think of it as a snapshot of your financial life. It outlines your income, expenses, and monthly needs. This information is used when determining issues such as child support, spousal maintenance, and in some cases, attorney fees.
These forms typically take about an hour to complete, but accuracy is extremely important. If you have questions or would like help filling them out, our office is always happy to assist.
Our Goal for Your First Meeting
The goal of your initial consultation is simple. We want you to leave with clarity, a better understanding of the process ahead, and confidence that you are supported every step of the way.
If you’re preparing for your consultation and have questions ahead of time, please reach out. We’re here to help.
